Shift magazine from Japan has been trying to offer artists many platforms to showcase their works online. The Shift calendar competition held from 2003 successively pushes the boundaries between online and off line using a “calendar” as its medium. Entries are invited from all over the world and 12 selected works are distributed throughout the world in the format of a physical calendar. For the 6th competition for the year 2009, they have received 1,572 entries from 42 countries. 12 carefully selected works will decorate each month of the Shift calendar, which will be on sale from October 20th and will appear in shops and galleries around the world.

The story may not be recent, but a Lego version of one of the largest ships afloat never gets old. In February 2005, after watching a documentary about aircraft carriers, IT consultant Malle Hawking from Munich, Germany, was inspired to make one of his own - using Lego bricks.

Hawking said that he used to play and build Lego models when he was a boy but stopped in his teens. With about 25 pictures from the Internet for reference, he tried to copy the Harry S. Truman again and again until he got it right.

“It took me months to purchase the parts and besides assembling sessions after work I can’t think of anything I have done in my life before that was as exhausting as sorting through all the pieces,” said Hawking.

About £10,000, over 300,000 Lego bricks and more than a year later, his scale model of the aircraft carrier was finally completed.

Measuring over 5m long, 1.2m high and weighing more than 160kg, the Lego USS Harry S. Truman is the largest Lego ship in the world. It is just like the original even to the smallest of details. It features electric lights on the flight deck, in the hangar and inside the aircraft, as well as movable lifts and radar dishes, and even a motorized catapult.

The (real) USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) is the first ship in the United States Navy to be named after the 33rd President of the United States. She was commissioned on July 25, 1998, where Bill Clinton was the keynote speaker of the ceremony.

The aircraft carrier’s first deployment was in Operation Southern Watch from November 28, 2000 to May 23, 2001. During the Truman team’s involvement in OSW, the air wing flew 869 combat sorties, totaling more than 2,700 flight hours.

In competition year 2004, the USS Harry S. Truman won the Marjorie Sterrett Battleship Fund Award, an honor given to the most battle-ready ship in the US Atlantic Fleet. She also received the Battle “E” award for three consecutive years, from 2003 to 2005.

Creator of the world’s first underwater sculpture park, Jason de Caires Taylor has gained international recognition for his unique work. His sculptures highlight ecological processes whilst exploring the intricate relationships between modern art and the environment. By using sculptures to create artificial reefs, the artist’s interventions promote hope and recovery, and underline our need to understand and protect the natural world. The sculptures are sited in clear shallow waters to afford easy access by divers, snorkellers and those in glass-bottomed boats. Viewers are invited to discover the beauty of our underwater planet and to appreciate the processes of reef evolution.

The Underwater Sculpture Gallery in Grenada, West Indies is a project started in May 2006 by sculptor Jason Taylor, with the support of the Grenadian Ministry of Tourism and Culture. The Underwater Sculpture Park also explores the ever-changing relationships of Art and the environment, whilst providing a unique and fascinating marine park for scuba diving

Daniel is an actor, entertainer, and contortionist. He is actually the most flexible man alive. He has trained extensively in order to accomplish that. Unlike most contortionists who generally are trained to bend in one direction (back benders or front benders), He is able to bend in all directions. He can bend so far backwards the top of his head can touch the seat of his pants, so far forward he can kiss his own butt. He can dislocate both arms and legs and even turn his torso 180 degrees.

The Rubberboy has three Guinness World Records for his flexibility. He dislocates his arms to crawl through an unstrung tennis racquet. He performs contortion handstands and unique acrobatics. Daniel crams his body into an 18-gallon box, which is only 13.5 inches x 16 inches x 19.5 inches!! (Your TV is bigger!) He has combined all of his special skills into an amazing and hilarious show. He performs any where from sporting events to concert halls and corporate functions.

He uses his contortion skills combined with his acting ability to conform his body in to any shape. He has experience with creature suit work, motion capture, stunts, commercial and theatrical acting, live performance, and tradeshow presentation. Daniel has become the most famous contortionist alive today. From stage to screen no other contortionist has been witnessed by as many audiences.
