When Ian Fleming’s novel Goldfinger was published in 1959, he provided James Bond with an Aston Martin for the first time. Prior to that, Bond had been driving Bentleys. In the book, he offered the following description: „Bond had been offered the Aston Martin or a Jaguar 3.4. He had taken the DB III. Either of the cars would have suited his cover – a well-to-do, rather adventurous young man with a taste for the good, the fast things of life. But the DB III had the advantage of an up-to-date triptyque: these included switches to alter the type and colour of Bond’s front and rear lights if he was following or being followed at night, reinforced steel bumpers, fore and aft, in case he needed to ram, a long-barreled Colt 45 in a trick compartment under the driver’s seat, a radio pick-up tuned to receive a radio station called the Homer, and plenty of concealed space that would fox most Customs men.” However Ken Adam, the production designer and John Stears, the special effects supervisor, were still not satisfied. In the autumn of 1963, they visited the Aston Martin works in Newport Pagnell, in order to discuss several modifications with a group of engineers. They chose what was then the fastest horse in the stall: a silver metallic Aston Martin DB 5 (silver birch would have been the factory standard). According to the script, Bond was to escape with the car and then defend himself with it. To make this possible, the following extras were installed in the vehicle with the license plate BMT 216 A:

  • Front and rear extending over-rider rams
  • Front firing .30 calibre Browning Machine machine guns behind the front indicators
  • Retractable tyre slashers (three eared spinners)
  • Retractable rear bullet proof screen
  • Radio telephone concealed in secret door compartment
  • Radar scanner in racing type wing mirror, tracking screen in the cockpit
  • Passenger ejector seat - roof panel jettisoned just before the seat is fired
  • Oil slick ejector from nearside rear light cluster
  • Triple spiked nails (calthrops) from the offside rear light cluster
  • Cartridge for smoke screen released through the exhaust pipes
  • Revolving number plates (BMT 216A - UK, 4711-EA-62 - France and LU 6789 - Switzerland)
  • Armaments drawer under front driver seat
  • Bullet-proof front and rear screens
  • Initially, the effects car, DP216/1 was the only car with the extras fitted by the film production company, DB5/1486/R was in effect just a standard road car. But such was the demand for the DB5 to appear around the world to publicise the films, the road car, DB5/1486/R and a further two cars that never appeared in the films, DB5/2008R and DB5/2017/R, had the 007 extras fitted by the Works. Below are the best pictures that I have found to illustrate the special features built into the cars. These have been taken from a 1965 brochure that Aston Martin produced to be given out when the cars were displayed to the public.

Both DB5’s also appeared in the 1965 James Bond film, Thunderball, with the addition of a Jet pack in the boot and rear firing water cannons. By 1968, DP216/1 still owned by AML was returned to the Works and all the film company fitted special effects were removed prior to sale as a normal road car. Shortly after DP216/1 was refitted with replica effects by a Kent coachbuilder before being sold to an American collector. DP216/1 went on to feature in the 1981 film ‘The Cannonball Run but was stolen in June 1997 from a hanger in Florida and I believe it’s whereabouts are unknown. It may never be seen again.

The other three Works modified DB5’s still exist but two are rarely seen in public. The Road car, DB5/1486/R is privately owned in the USA. DB5/2008/R was for many years on display in the Smoky Mountain Car Museum but was offered form sale by RM auctions in January 2006 where it achieved $2,090,000. And the last works replica, DB5/2017/R is part of the Dutch National Motor Museum, the Louwman Collection, in Raamadonksveer which I have photographed both in its home and at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August 2007.

After it became clear that Goldfinger would become a huge financial success, and a flood of requests came to put the DB 5 on display, the company built two replicas of the car for promotional purposes. These cars had some additional equipment details. One of them had a telephone that was installed in the door on the driver’s side. It also had a special reserve tank and a very luxurious interior trim with antelope leather. All three vehicles (and two others which had been used during the filming) were exhibited at numerous motor shows and charity events; they turned out to be the best publicity-makers that the luxury carmaker ever had.

Imagine if millions of people had seen you naked before you were old enough to say “embarrassing.” That’s the story of Spencer Elden, whom you may know as the little baby floating towards a dollar bill on the cover of Nirvana’s 1991 album, Nevermind.

Nearly 17 years later, amid hating school and playing water polo, Elden is still struggling to make sense of his (very) public image.

“Quite a few people in the world have seen my penis,” he says from his home in Los Angeles. “So that’s kinda cool. I’m just a normal kid living it up and doing the best I can while I’m here.”

Nevermind is often credited with changing the face of rock. Elden’s naked participation in this important moment in music history was rather accidental; Kirk Weddle, the photographer working on the cover, was simply a friend of Spencer’s dad, Rick.

“[He] calls us up and was like, ‘Hey Rick, wanna make 200 bucks and throw your kid in the drink?,’” Rick recounts. “I was like, ‘What’s up?’ And he’s like, ‘Well, I’m shooting kids all this week, why don’t you meet me at the Rose Bowl, throw your kid in the drink?’ And we just had a big party at the pool, and no one had any idea what was going on!”

Three months later, while driving down Sunset Blvd., the Elden family spotted a 9-foot-by-9-foot Spencer floating across Tower Records’ wall. Two months later, Geffen Records sent 1-year-old Spencer Elden a platinum album and a teddy bear.

Over the coming years, 26 million albums were sold. As Elden learned to walk, talk and sing — his pale baby arms stretched across millions of grungy fans’ walls; his private parts stood magnified across billboards and floors.

In some places, his image stuck. The other day, his friends spotted a giant Nevermind photo on the floor of a record store in Hollywood.

“My friend is all like, ‘Hey I saw you today.’ And I’m like, ‘Dude, I was working all day.’ And he’s like, ‘No, I went to Geffen Records, and you’re on the floor and you’re floating and I stepped on your face. ‘Cause I guess they have like a floating thing where people can like walk on me and stuff … so it’s kinda cool,” he says.

nirvana nevermind album cover, Spencer Elden

Life in general isn’t quite as “cool” as it was when he jumped naked in the pool in the early ’90s, though, he says. These days, his peers are too stuck on the Internet and video games. Ironically, he yearns for the era that gave Kurt Cobain, the lead singer for Nirvana, so much angst.

These days, Elden says, his peers concentrate on “playing Rock Band on Xbox, like, that’s not a real band! That’s the difference between the ’90s and kids nowadays; kids in the ’90s would actually go out and make a [real] band!”

But overall, life is good, he says. When he’s not being repressed by video games and computers, Elden blasts music — mostly techno — and carries around a big bag of angst, mostly around the fact that he is “so over” high school.

“Same people, same teachers … going to your locker, worrying about stupid girls … I wanna get something going, I wanna travel,” he says.

Last fall, travel he did — all the way to military boarding school for six months. All his parents will say is that he’s done his fair share of “testing authority.”

Now he’s trying to graduate high school a year early. And he’s talking about applying to West Point or becoming an artist … or something.

As Spencer is wont to say, “I just take it as it comes. If I like it, I like it; if I don’t like it, I don’t like it.”

Recently Parikrama, the largest rock act of India performed in Patiala. The venue was at the annual fest at Thapar College errr… University. They performed an amazing gig and the engineering students were all crazy for that blazzing performance. I personally have seen their 3 gigs so far but seriously they have really become very tight after their tour in UK. Nitin will surely die of screaming cancer, if there is such a thing. Even they had a great time performing down here, i dont have to say anything, the images speak for themselves…..

Heya everybody..!! I just got back from the launch party of Pammi Bai’s latest album “Dhol Te Dhamalaan” which was launched in Hotel Mount View Chandigarh. The album was launched by Hans Raj Hans along with Bhagwant Maan while Prof. Rajpal conducted the whole ceremony. Many other artists including Raj Brar, Raj Kakra and Sukha Bai were also there. Also got to see the full video of the song “Eh Kam Jattian De” which i must say is really an amazing video. The camera movements and the choreography of this video along with low-down and crane shots is just brilliant… i loved it. Congrats to Poonam for directing such a beauty. Bai will be shooting the next video for the song “Jatt Di Dang” next week in which my Jeep Casshern will be featured.. i might as well be in the video.. who knows…

There was another reason for my going to the party to the party because i designed the site www.pammibai.com along with Prince (who developed it), which was also launched along with the album today. I gave a demonstration of the advanced Flash site as well. Do check it out if you have some time.

Im also posting the scanned images of the album cover personally autographed by Pammi Bai. Enjoy..!! By the weekend is over ill also post the images from the party, so keep an eye here for any update.

    comics, movies

    the sadhu, movie, comic

The stale news is that the oriental postmodern (or vice versa) comic The Sadhu from the house of “Virgins” will be turned into a movie. This amazing comic series that Virgin Comics started under the name of The Sadhu is a hit as far as its artworks and storyline goes, just like any other comic series from the house of Virgin. This news should have made me jump off my chair.. it did indeed… but when I read about the protagonist who is going to act the part of Sadhu, I sank deeper into the oblivion of my chair. This guy… this guy who is going to be the protagonist of this not-so-highly-anticipated movie anymore, has the ability to ruin a very good plot and amazing scripts. This guy has done it before, and he will.. probably.. do it again… this guy is none other then… well… Nicolas Cage… I liked him in Lord of War, but never had an interest in his ghost busting acting capabilities. Anyways, I shouldn’t be biased, but just cant help it.

Okay lets move on, lets not talk about Cage. Moving on, Shekhar Kapoor is directing the movie. Of course he will. He and Deepak Chopra’s son Batman.. sorry Gotham Chopra run Virgin Comics. Lets count our odds.. Shekhar Kapoor… recently divorced… known for his moody behavior… kinda psycho… busy schedules… okay.. the chances are astronomical that this movie will never get made. Nevertheless, the team has officially announced that they will start shooting in India in 2008. I thought we just had enough of Jolie and Brat.. sorry Brad.

The official release said that "Nick chose Shekhar to direct the film. The Sadhu is an iconic character"… I really want to laugh my ass out on this.. so much that at the end of my laughing spree, I’d want to cry… may I? He chose? Hello..!! I reckon he also chose Ivan Reitman to direct The Ghostbusters. Well, it says that Cage became interested in the project after reading the comic last year.

Whatever comes out of this, I hope it doesn’t affect the great comic series that Virgin has launched. These comic books have some of the great artworks that ever existed in India, and for once, Indians can proudly present some cult comic art to the world. Finally we will be known for something else then illustrated Kamasutra and M. F. Hussain.

    music, rock, indian rock scene

    parikrama, rock band

Before you read this memoir written by Subir Malik, who serves the Keyboard duties in the band Parikrama, go on and watch the videos of Parikrama’s performance at Download Fest. The song “Vapourize” …yes they do spell with a U, has to be the biggest rocker from Parikrama over the years and so was the performance:

    Parikrama - Am I Dreaming

Parikrama - Tears of the Wizard

    Parikrama - Open Skies

    Parikrama - Vapourize

And now, here is the article written for HT city by Subir himself, published on June 25th 2007, to give you an insight of our experience at the Download festival:

2 months of preparations, endless practice sessions, 479 hours on the internet, 1763 email exchanges with Phantom music, 14 hotels rejected for not having electric kettles, shopping sessions for Kohinoor pre-cooked food/clothes/Flat pin adapters/classic milds/Underwears and many other unmentionable miscellaneous items….AND then we were there, standing on the Moto GP Podium, at the legendary DONINGTON PARK, hoping to see Rossi up there, just a few weeks from the biggest day of our lives, the 10th of June 2007 A.D. Yes, we were playing the Download Festival.

The morning chill and fog still settling down, and we, 67 minutes before time (maybe our excitement), still looking for the open truck to take all our stuff to the mainstage. 8:07 am – the stuff is loaded and we are all seated in the transfer coach beaming with confidence, anxiety and waiting to see how the world looks from up there, up there on the mainstage. 08:16 am- we reach the band hospitality area of the festival, we cross a horde of green rooms, and they read Dream Theatre, Evanescence, Stone sour, Lamb of God, Mastodon, Chimaira and finally Parikrama. The room had everything a band needs before a show, big fat sofas, centrally air conditioned, loads of food, water, juices and 48 cans of chilled beer. Though, we used a few of the things provided, we left the beers, post 11:25 am.

08:39 am – We finally reach “up there” and it looks/feels wonderful. What a view man!09:16 a:m- We start setting up our backline backstage. 09:27 am: we are ready to go onstage, but the Maiden crew is doing a tech check, and it’s an experience to just see ‘em doing their stuff. 10:17 am – we finally get the go ahead to “occupy” the mainstage. The Download crew just rolls our stuff on trolleys to the stage. 10:51 a:m – we are through with a line check and ready to rock.

10:57 am – We do a band embrace, backstage, and here we are to start our set. There are about 20,000 people (rest are still sleeping, as it’s a wet cloudy day) waiting and they give us a really needed clap and cheers of acceptance, as we come back on the stage. 11:00
